Options to Backup Your Data

As people use PC’s more and for more activities, keeping a reliable backup of stored data becomes more and more important.  Back in the day a few files, spreadsheets and computer information could fit nicely on a floppy disc.  Not any longer.  With music files, video and pictures, the PC has become the clearinghouse for family archives.  It is not uncommon for people to have 10’s of gigabytes of data.  Burning all this data to a disc drive can be time consuming.

Thankfully there are other options.  There are few online options and one easy upgrade option to keep your valuable data safe.  Two interesting websites provide online backup services - Mozy (http://mozy.com/) & Carbonite (http://www.carbonite.com/).  Both offer free trial of the service, with Mozy offering a free service of up to 2 GB.  Both offer monthly fees for larger backups.

If you have a fast, reliable internet connection at home or in the office, these online services can get you up & running without having to purchase additional hardware.  Setups are easy for both and do not require a great deal of computer knowledge to get started.  An offsite backup is a great idea to be safe.

If you would rather keep your backup in house a solid idea is to purchase an external hard drive.  Drive costs are low, and you can get a 200 GB drive or larger for $90 and above.  Setups require a little more knowledge, but most manufacturers help guide you through the setup of both the hardware and backup software.

Either way a data backup plan is a must today.
